Paying off debt remains top priority for Cambodians

[khmertimeskh] The Consumer Report Cambodia 2024 reveals that debt repayment is the primary financial concern for Cambodians across all age groups and regions. While younger individuals prioritize reducing expenses and increasing income, and older generations focus on retirement savings, debt remains a universal challenge. The report also highlights additional financial goals, including saving for major purchases, investing, and building emergency funds, indicating a broad awareness of financial planning. Kampong Speu notably emphasizes increasing income through side businesses, reflecting regional economic variations.

Seng Hon, a research fellow with Centre for Economic Studies, Fudan University, attributes this debt-focused trend to the lingering effects of the pandemic, which significantly impacted the earnings of self-employed, low-income, and middle-class Cambodians. Despite economic recovery, the accumulated debt continues to burden these groups, necessitating a prolonged period of repayment.
